I had been looking for a new bike for awhile now. I went and test drove a '96 Savage, and I really liked it. Two weeks later I finally bought a 1987 Savage with 9800 miles. I loved riding it. It had a new Cam, Cam chain and Tensioner put in it about 500 miles ago. The one thing that I noticed on this bike is that there was a clicking noise coming from the head. I thought that it was just the valves needing adjustment. But it didn't help.
As it turned out, there was a oil passage plugged and the cam tore itself apart. The bearing on the end was completely destroyed. I may have to buy a complete head and valve cover, (in addition to the cam, rockers, and seals) if I cannot find a used one.
I have sent a couple of emails to the various motorcycle salvage yards I found online, but have gotten no response yet. Does anyone here know where I could find a head? or Does anyone have experience machining the head and making a custom bushing for the cam?
Your help is appreciated. BTW, this forum is great.
